Meet The Face Behind ACT First Aid And Safety Training

I’m Kalana Sembakuttige, the proud owner of ACT First Aid and Safety Training. I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

Ever since I was young, I have dreamt of owning a successful business someday. This passion came from watching how hard my parents worked to provide for my brother and I, seeing them achieve their goals no matter the struggle.

One of the things I was most passionate about in my youth was swimming. I took swimming and lifeguarding classes. After completing all necessary levels and certifications, I started my first part-time job as an aquatic program assistant for the City of Toronto in 2011. During this time, I fell in love with teaching, gained an interest in first aid and life-saving. I continued to achieve advanced certifications and positions within the Parks Forestry and Recreation division in the City of Toronto.

Finally, in April 2018, I knew what I wanted to do with my passion for teaching and first aid. In July of the same year, I became a fully certified first aid examiner with the Life-Saving Society. Once I graduated from school in 2021, I took the steps toward my dream of business ownership. In 2022, I took the calculated risk and went full-time as my own boss to achieve my goals.

The most rewarding part about owning my own business is knowing I am making a difference to my students. I have said for multiple years that our learning curriculum and delivery methods must grow along with soceity. Being my own boss gives me the ability to use my passion and my job to create change in our youth. My job allows me to work with youth everyday and make a difference in their lives, either at their workplace or in their daily lives. Also, having the ability to schedule my own time has been advantageous to allow me to do what I want to do. My business philosophy is “Behind every successful person are many unsuccessful years,” so never give up.

As an individual, I believe what sets me apart from others is my commitment to honesty, excellence, and dedication.

I attribute my success to my loving parents. They showed me what it means to persevere and proved that it could be achieved if you put your mind to it.

Knowing that what I do makes a difference has given me immense satisfaction.

I have a few different hobbies and interests when I am not at work. I most enjoy swimming, working out, and time with family.

I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
